Fresh off the atmospheric delight ‘Cellophane Rainbow’ and a feature performance at “Let Go Fest” alongside Gang of Youths, Canberra’s finest three piece SAFIA bring forth their first offering of 2018 in ‘Freakin’ Out’, a thriller of a track that keeps you in suspense and keeps you wanting more.

From the first glimpse of ‘Freakin’ Out’, we are immediately hit with a sense of familiarity through inspirations from previous hit ‘Counting Sheep’ in the form of the chilling soundscape carried by the piano mixed with haunting samples popping in and out of the mix. Like all SAFIA’s previous releases, lead signer Ben Woolner melodies are captivating from their inception and achieve perfection within the chorus where his signature falsetto is met with a spooky counter melody which provides an intriguing contrast.

‘Freakin’ Out’ is the gift that keeps on giving throughout its duration, with many hidden gems hidden throughout the mix if you listen carefully. Whether it is the charismatic feel within the electric guitar, the swooping pads that follow the rises of the chorus or the thickness in the bass, SAFIA do not attempt to overcomplicate the mix and rather strategically place these to add significant character to the track.
