After combining forces in 2016 for arguably one of the biggest Triple J “Like A Version’s” in recent history covering Kid Cudi’s ‘Day N Nite’, Just A Gent enlists the soulful vocals of Thandi Phoenix once again for his latest single ‘Space Odyssey’ – a track that places significant emphasis on resounding bass and depth within the synth production resulting in a powerful display of electronic music.

‘Space Odyssey’ takes us on an enthralling journey from inception through the wobbling synths, complimented with the insertion of sampled vocals scattered around the background to set the scene for the charming vocals of Thandi Phoenix to enter the arena. As Phoenix displays her signature effortless yet colourful melodies, we are met with the implementation of the brooding bass-line that leads into the shift in intensity signalled through the energetic percussion. As we progress through a tactical reprieve, we see Just A Gent manipulate the mix into a momentary pause that is met with a distorted Phoenix outcry ‘Can you hear me calling’ that leads into a depth-defying chorus full of movement in the synths and drive in the percussion.

A moment that stands out in ‘Space Odyssey’ begins at the 2:16 mark. We see Gent break the mix down through a half time feel in the percussion, whilst creating room in the background for some subtle samples floating around for that additional splash of colour. Then we see a playful melody in the harmonised synth that moves hand in hand with the buzzing bassline, before adding some white noise that heightens the intensity within this period before Phoenix carries the piece home through some spellbinding melodies.

Aussie fans can also catch Just A Gent around the country right now as he hits the road for his “Just A Tour” tour – all ticketing info can be found here
