Welcome to the next installment of BTM, a weekly series where we get to shine a spotlight on some of the hard-working people “Behind The Music”; the artists managers, booking agents, publicists, indie label owners, music website editors and so on.

This week’s spotlight is shining on Dom Miller of Australian booking agency New World Artists. I work with Dom directly via one of my management artists, Golden Vessel, and I can confidently say that he is one of the good guys. He works super hard for all of his artists and he is very passionate about his work and the industry.

Tell us who you are, what you do, and who you represent?
I’m Dom Miller, I’m an agent with New World Artists and we represent a list of amazing artists across all genres – too long to list here!

How did you get into this line of work?
I started out in a band, played and toured around the country, then moved into management. From there I also booked venues, festivals and touring events. One day I had a call from New World Artists asking me to join their amazing team, and of course I jumped at the chance!

What are some of your biggest achievements?
To me, my biggest achievements have always involved helping an artist achieve a goal or dream they’ve been working towards. I wouldn’t be doing this if I didn’t love and believe in my artists, so seeing them succeed in career gives me an enormous sense of fulfilment.

Tell us one thing that you would love to see change or happen that you feel would help make the music industry a better place?
More Australian music being showcased on commercial radio, TV, films, etc. We have so much good music in this country – it needs to be put in front of more people!

What is your most favourite thing about the industry or what you do?
The people. Whether they’re musicians, managers, other agents, label people, fans, I just love being able to meet and talk with people who love and live music. They’re always special people, and I get to work with them every day.

What is your least favourite thing about the industry or what you do?
The late nights haha

Where do you see the future of the industry heading?
I see Australia becoming even more an international force. We’re doing pretty well but I can see more Australian music on overseas stages, radio, blogs, EVERYWHERE! I want Australian music to take over the world.

What do you do to unwind outside of the industry/work?
Hang out with my partner and my dog in The Greatest City On Earth (Brisbane). I like to cook, I like to read, I like to spend time with my family. I also do a fair bit of MCing and hosting of events – that is a lot of fun too.
