Top 10 Albums of 2016 by Bernie Bolger

words by Bernie Bolger

The following list contains my TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2016. When pulling my hair out creating this list, I tried to balance the emotional impression an album had on me with how whole the album feels. I gave extra points to albums that were fresh and innovative, melting genres.

The top spot is the biggest no brainer while the rest of the list gets exponentially more interchangeable as it progresses.

The list ranges from electronic heavyweights Leon Vynehall and Flume to more rock formatted folk and hip-hop/jazz with the likes of Whitney and Koi Child respectively. Yeo and GL released some of the funkiest dance music of the year, both with outstanding vocals and production throughout the albums. This leaves Anderson .Paak, James Blake and Frank Ocean, who all excel with their talents in singing and song-writing.

1. James Blake – The Colour in Anything

2. Leon Vynehall – Rojus (Designed to Dance)

3. Yeo – Ganbaru

4. Frank Ocean – Blonde

5. Flume – Skin

6. GL – Touch

7. Koi Child – Koi Child

8. Whitney – Light Upon the Lake

9. Anderson .Paak – Malibu

10. Radiohead – A Moon Shaped Pool

Honourable Mentions:
Zhu – ‘GenerationWhy’, Polographia – ‘Friends EP’, Mick Jenkins – ‘The Healing Component’, Kaytranada – ‘99.9%’, Lido – ‘EVERYTHING’, BadBadNotGood – ‘IV’, Michael Kiwanuka – ‘Love & Hate’, NxWorries – ‘Yes Lawd!’, Majid Jordan – ‘Majid Jordan’
