Lana Del Rey – Freak [New Single + Video]

words by Delia Bartle

Lana Del Rey’s latest music video leaves behind the typically stylised glamour of the pop world and instead transports viewers to a washed-out world of French impressionistic artwork.

“The whole thing was inspired by a moving Monet,” Del Rey said in an interview with Billboard. “We were shooting with a couple of special cameras and shooting everything in slow motion, and taking a lot of time to colour it.” By the looks of the shimmering pastel colours of the music video’s world, Lana Del Rey has achieved her goal of stepping into a Claude Monet artwork.

The 11-minute video accompanies ‘Freak’, one of the tracks from Del Rey’s fourth studio album, Honeymoon, which debuted at No.2 on the Billboard 200. Ex-Fleetwood Fox artist Father John Misty leads the cast, appearing as a man who takes a drug-induced dream-like trip through California accompanied by women dressed in white. Del Rey was thrilled to have Misty on board for the video. “I wanted Father John Misty to do something with me and he was nice enough to agree to be my leading man,” she said.

Honeymoon is available now from iTunes and on Spotify, and you can watch the new video for ‘Freak’ right here:
