What started as a single studio session has grown into “STATIC FM”, the debut collaborative ep from SF producers Rydr and Juggan. Written across months of studio sessions, stem swaps and Zoom calls, the project finds the pair stepping beyond their UK garage roots to explore a wide spectrum of electronic sounds.
Moving from the French house groove of ‘C’est Toi’ and the dreamy sample work of ‘Stay’ through to the UKG bounce of ‘Bounce’ and the bass-heavy energy of ‘Drugs’, “STATIC FM” thrives on its genre-hopping approach. Inspired by the idea of white noise containing every frequency at once, the ep ties together seemingly contrasting influences into one cohesive listening experience, proving that sometimes the best ideas come from embracing a little chaos.
“Static FM is a collaborative EP that has been in the works since we met in January. We began collaborating with no intention of making an EP, but soon discovered that we worked well together. After numerous studio sessions, meet ups and Zoom calls, everything started to fall into place. Both of us typically fall under the umbrella of UKG, but this EP had nods to French House with “C’est Toi,” an ode to Clams Casino with ethereal sample chops on “Stay,” elements of more traditional UKG with “Bounce,” and outright bass music with “Drugs”. Given that the EP was intentionally chaotic, we were both drawn to basing the theme of the project around white noise. White noise contains all frequencies simultaneously; the individual sounds, while distinct on their own, end up becoming static. The EP feels like you’re being pulled under multiple genres of electronic music, while staying coherent. Similar to a radio station blending genres, yet still maintaining a clear identity. This is how we came up with the name Static FM, a body of work all over the place yet somehow making sense given the space that it lives in.” ~ Rydr
