Over the last few months New Zealand artist Tarn PK has given us a few very cool tracks while making promise of his third ep coming our way soon, and today he is very excited to be sharing that ep with us all.
It’s titled “SugarCoated” and it is a very nice five-track collection of his alternative/indie/hyper-pop sound and style, which is very much worthy of your time and attention, and it’s also really great to read his insight into the making of the ep and the thoughts processes he was experiencing during that time…
“I wanted it to feel super consistent from song to song. There are a lot of similar sounds which I used, there’s one clav sound which is used in pretty much every song. I’ve always been a fan of producers and artists that can keep using the same sounds, but make them feel different and distinct which was something I was excited to try.
Although I was making an EP that was more electronic focused, it was important for it to never feel to clean. There’s a lot of distortion and bit crushing to make it feel a little messy. I was really inspired by bedroom artists who embrace the bad quality sounds of their DAW and just dial it up to 10. A lot of the sounds used in the project are stock Logic sounds.
The lyrics are always important, but my aim was to capture a feeling and if the words felt right, that was better than if they made sense. A lot of the tracks err towards stream of conscious, particularly ‘Fever Dream’ and ‘SugarCoated’. It was important for me to let go of trying to say too much and just say what felt right in the moment.
The featured track off the EP ‘SugarCoated’ was the last track recorded. Lyrically it’s me thinking about society, social media, and our tendencies to try and ‘sugar coat’ what our lives look like. ”
