Midnight Pool Party are closing out the year with a new single called, “BOYS LIKE YOU,” which is an electrifying blend of disco, dance and R&B influences. The track brings a fresh twist to their signature sound, fusing upbeat grooves with a playful yet introspective narrative.
“This is our third single for 2024, and we wanted to try something different from our last two releases,” says Darren Morilla, one-half of Midnight Pool Party. “We aimed for a song that could make people dance but also wanted to explore new musical influences, blending a Pop/R&B vibe with K-pop elements while maintaining our unique MPP sound.”
“BOYS LIKE YOU” is a story of flirtation and the exciting tension of early attraction. The lyrics capture the duality of emotions in the initial stages of romance – the confidence of “playing hard to get” contrasted with the vulnerability of truly falling for someone. “It’s meant to be fun because courtship and those early days of getting to know someone can be thrilling,” Darren explains. “I wanted the song to reflect that sense of playful back-and-forth.”
During the writing process, Darren initially hesitated to complete “BOYS LIKE YOU” because of its overtly personal narrative. “The song is about a boy crushing on another boy, and I worried it might limit our audience. But the fact that I even stopped to think about it felt ridiculous,” Darren reflects. “Love and attraction are universal feelings, and anyone can relate to the emotions in the song.”
