Mel Blue – Back Then, Computer Sound (EP)

Over the last few months, we’ve heard snippets of Mel Blue‘s upcoming EP but now, we’re able to listen to the London-based Australian trio’s new EP ‘Back Then, Computer Sound’ in full, and it’s definitely been worth the wait.

‘Fantasy’ feels incredibly vibrant and uplifting like the EP’s title track, but the warped tones add more funk to the production and help to cast your mind back to the sun-drenched house music of the early 2000’s. ‘My Heart’s in Your Hands’ has a deeper groove than ‘Fantasy’, with cooling synths and softer vocal samples; ‘I Can’t Take the Heartbreak’ uses crisp production and light percussion to give the minimalistic melody movement, and the piano tones on ‘4byfour’ inject the track with both a romantic and nostalgic feel. ‘Master Blaster’ feels like the most contemporary house track on the EP, but it still blends into the rest of the tracks seamlessly and is a wonderful closing track, bringing the journey of ‘Back Then, Computer Sound’ to a close.

‘Back Then, Computer Sound’ feels like a bit of a time-warp, transporting you through the recent history of house music and highlighting all of the fantastic ways it’s evolved over time. It’s an education, but one you’d sit through over and over because Mel Blue’s compositions are just so infectious.
