“Radical Romantics” is the brand-new album from Swedish project Fever Ray and I am very pleased to say they have not disappointed with this one.
Fever Ray first started working on this album back in 2019 and was then joined in 2020 by brother, and second member of The Knife, Olof Dreijer who helped co-produce and co-write the album opener ‘What They Call Us’, making this the first time the siblings have produced and written music together in over eight years!
Fever Ray also worked with a variety of other co-producers and performers including Nídia, Johannes Berglund, Peder Mannerfelt and Pär Grindvik’s technicolor dance project Aasthma, and the aforementioned power duo of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross (Nine Inch Nails) and experimental artist and producer Vessel.
And we have to make special mention of the person behind the visual aspect of this album, Martin Falck, which is just so incredibly eye-catching and creepy.
“The different voices are different sides of the storyteller—the one who’s writing the lyrics, which I don’t really see as me. That is very blurry. Of course I write the lyrics. But music works for me as a totally open space. I can do whatever I want. I do not have to think about gender so much, which is amazing, because in real life, you have to think about it all the time—how you’re perceived and what you are about to perform. It’s very luxurious to have this playground where you can be totally free.” ~ Fevery Ray (via Instagram)
