RL Grime – Live at Hordern Pavilion, Sydney [Review]

LA based producer RL Grime (Henry Steinway) is back in Australia, touring his latest album ‘NOVA’, and played a packed Hordern Pavilion that left many steamy customers slipping all over the polished concrete floors.

Support from Buddy and Bauuer, (originally it was meant to be GoldLink – but he cancelled his tour for personal reasons), had the crowd pumped and ready to go, even if Bauuer played a truncated set. Their bass heavy, electronic/robotic inspired beats with heavy drops were the perfect warm up to the main act.

‘NOVA’ is one hell of an album, with many of the big singles making it into the live show. The new album is eclectic, with variations from rolling drum ‘n’ bass’ builds, to autotuned samples, and massive drops. Steinway has done an impressive job of curtailing all of these different themes into a seamless show. Combining tracks from the new album, with flips and reworks of RL Grime classics means those lucky enough to get tickets aren’t left disappointed,

As expected, none of the high profile collaborations (Chief Keef, Jeremih, Tory Lanez, Ty Dolla $ign and Miguel) came out to perform, but this doesn’t take away from the spectacle of the show, with an abundance of pyrotechnics, streamers, and lasers making up for it. He is a master of spectacle when it comes to EDM shows.

RL Grime will continue touring his new album in Indonesia, the US, and Mexico.
