Lastlings – Verses EP [Review]

Thanks to Triple J ‘Unearthed High’ I discovered a new duo called Lastlings, which I instantly connected with. I love the fact that they’re siblings, but what impresses me even more is their ability to make music that is on trend and comes from deep within.

Josh and Amy Dowdle, have nailed the dream-pop vibes on this record. Their drifty electronic gems take me to magical places on all seven tracks, and it’s kinda funny because each song rolls into the next so seamlessly it’s often hard to tell which is a new song. I think this says a lot about their finesse; there is a unity and cohesion in their music that is often overlooked by artists, but this young duo show experience and creative genius beyond their years.

“VERSES is a collection of works that embodies our experiences over the past year. Ultimately, we hope to be able to provoke thoughts and emotions that would otherwise go unfelt and allow our listeners to draw their own conclusions based on their own imaginations.”

‘Urges’ received great praise on the radio waves but I have to say the standout track on the EP is actually ‘You’. It is so eerie, but there’s something about it that just leaves me feeling like I’ve been punched in the guts. While some people may think this is weird, to me, that feeling is such a powerful one because they’ve been able to reach my core with their lyrical and melodic strength.

Notable mention must also go to the track ‘Time’. It’s got a bit more guts to it while still maintaining that airy feel. It was also this track where I really heard a similarity between Amy and Lorde’s vocal stylings.

Lastlings have recently been on tour with Glass Animals and RÜFÜS, as well as making their mark on the festival scene with sets at ‘FOMO’ and ‘Pitch Festival’. They’re about to wrap their first headline tour for the release of their EP, and it’s all sold out, but they’re going to be at ‘Big Pineapple Music Festival’ in May so get there.

I’ve heard great things about their show and I’m really bummed I couldn’t get to it, but next time, I’ll 100% be there.
