Piknik Elektronik Melbourne, March 13th [Gig Review]

words by Alex Milne

Piknik Elektronik is the Summer Sunday series in the Melbourne CBD that is the go-to event for a weekend get-together with your friends. It’s been well established across the globe in Montreal, Lisbon, Santiago and Dubai – I was lucky enough to attend one in Barcelona back in July, so I knew that I was in for a great day in Melbourne

Piknik Elektronik boasts itself to be a family friendly event, suitable for all ages. Keep in mind that it is a licensed event, so I wouldn’t suggest that young kids stay after dark as it does get a little rowdy towards the end.

Hosted at ‘The Paddock’ at Federation Square, Piknik Elektronik was convenient to get to from Flinders Street Station. The layout is perfect for a chilled summer day with food trucks and bars out the back and loads of open space in front of the DJ. There are sun lounges and beach umbrellas to relax under and canopies that spray mist to cool down amongst when it gets extra hot. There is only one stage so you can easily keep the gang together.

The music is perfect for this kind of event. During the day it remains relaxed and groovy. Keeping everyone upbeat but not being too intense for the families that are around. The artists slowly progress the beat so that by the end of the day, when the city darkens and the lights come on, the DJ booth is lit up and the music is pumping.

This weekend the set finished off with a ripper remix of Blue Monday by Vandalism. A classic track that I haven’t heard in years, but everyone knew the words too. There was nothing better than singing along to that one with all my friends.

Rating: ★★★☆

Piknik Elektronik will be running for the next few Sundays, with the last one being on the 3rd of April. Forget about work on Monday and get tickets because they’re selling out fast.
