With an incoming EP due for release in July, Wellington-based artist, producer, and songwriter Tarn PK gives us the second glimpse of what’s to come through the title track of that release in ‘F.O.M.O’, a track delving into the mundane office work life through an industrialised instrumentation base.
‘F.O.M.O’ fuses indie/electronic influence together with absolute ease, achieving a brittleness in its approach that ensures a raw feeling amongst the soundscape. Driven by the soothing guitar riff, as well as the crunchy percussion, ‘F.O.M.O’ provides a sense of wonder with its openness on display within the mix that allows plenty of room for Tarn PK‘s soaring vocals to shine that extra bit brighter.
“F.O.M.O came out of my time working my 9-to-5 desk job and feeling like I wasn’t moving as quickly in my music career as I was wanting to. Labelling that fear instead of shying away from it felt like an important thing to write about. The seed for F.O.M.O was planted when the acronym began circling in my head. The chorus came naturally, but the lyrics for the verse took several iterations to come to fruition. Initially, the track was going to be a slow guitar-driven song; the breakthrough came when I sped up the tempo and added the breakbeat with the arpeggiating synthesiser. The dynamic this created sparked new melodic and production-wise ideas that helped to complete the song. In the production, I wanted to highlight that shift between the inwards and outwards, the introverted and extroverted, giving the chorus an expansive and cathartic opening up.” – Tarn PK
