KIMCHII evokes a sense of nostalgia through a laid-back offering titled ‘Do You Ever’, a mellowed new single that encompasses a gentle groove all while floating through its journey in an atmospheric manner.
With soaring instrumentation such as those ascending synths, as well as the tight-nit electronic percussion on offer, a minimalistic nature of the release allows plenty of space for those reverb-soaked vocals to stand tall and move in cohesion with the calming tempo instilled throughout the duration of the single.
“Do You Ever” began as a quiet sketch in 2021, during a strange and quiet period in my life. I didn’t return to it until Marcus Liesenfeld from Too Slow to Disco asked if I had something for his next compilation — that gave it new life. The string section was inspired by a disturbing Phil Spector documentary. I wanted it to feel rich but slightly off — like love, and like life: beautiful, unpredictable, and dissonant. The choirs came later, after watching a Brian Wilson documentary that left a strange kind of glow in my head. The guitars — my Gibson Les Paul, recorded for the first time — carry a warmth inspired by George Benson and the productions of Barry White’s Love Unlimited Orchestra. I used my analog Korg Polysix to build a kind of space around it all — something floating, like emotions and memory. It’s probably the most personal track I’ve released. Not just a ballad — a quiet collision of feeling, memory, and sound.” ~ KIMCHII
