My Playlist is a series where we ask some of our favourite artists to share some of their favourite songs, and while it may give us a bit of insight into some of their influences, we’re actually more interested to know what they enjoy listening to when they’re not making music.

This week we’re checking in with Australian artist Boo Seeka who has given us a few new singles over the last couple of months as he sowed the seeds of anticipation for his upcoming album “Between The Head & The Heart” which hits the shelves tomorrow (presave here), and what better time to check in and see what sort of music he’s been listening to!

“In times where I am writing music, in the past, listening to other artist’s music was something I have typically tried to stay away from. Chasing my own sound in my head can be very easily distracted if I listen to full albums of artists I love. It gives me anxiety because I feel I can never find anything as good as what they have done, even though I never look at music as a competition and only always as an expression.

But this changed for me while writing this album. I learned to enjoy listening to music within the process and understanding the influence of other songs and melodies without feeling I was replicating something. I found myself listening to most of these songs on repeat to and from the studio each day. I would hear something new within each song every time I listened to it. Diving deeper and deeper into the layers and the melodies that joined together to make songs that I love, and finally I can say other songs influenced me writing this album.

It has been a process I have enjoyed and will continue to enjoy with each song written in the future. Who knows what will make it on to my next playlist, but even I am keen to see what they are.” – Boo Seeka
