LA-via-Chicago artist appleby returns with a genre-bending offering full of pace and sparsity with his second single of the year in ‘Half Life’, a track that combines swift energy with moments of contemplation and space to produce what is a well rounded release.
With his soulful melodies producing a hefty amount of emotion, especially with the interchanging use of falsetto tones that haunt the mix, ‘Half Life’ quickly inserts the fast-paced nature of the percussion that provides an industrial palate to the already jam-packed soundscape. appleby takes this platform and provides a unique array of colour through the tactical use of both synths and pianos that provides a real point of difference, and as such maintains the uniqueness that the release is built upon.
“The writing process for Half Life was organic and borderline magical. It fell out of me like the idea was in a rush to exist. Much of the evening is blurry but I recorded it all in one night. I remember my room feeling suffocating like the walls were closing in. My hands felt like matchsticks and if I didn’t write about it immediately, I’d burn my room down. I threw myself head first into songwriting because it felt like the escape I desperately needed.” – appleby
