Surprise! Well only if you missed it last week. Canberra rapper Citizen Kay dropped a new track and video that gives us all those Kendrick Lamar vibes.

Fellow Canberran artist Georgia B adds a feminine flow to ‘These Kicks’, which came after Citizen Kay first heard her singing along to an Anderson .Paak song. He exclaimed, “I knew I wanted to work with her”.

This is a feel-good song laden with groovy hip-hop beats and a real chill swag. Shot in sunny Sydney and directed by Elder, the video tells a tale of a wildly positive homeless man, personifying Citizen Kay’s boundless sense of liberty. Very Pursuit of Happiness if you will!

Kay looks as dapper as ever sporting a newspaper print suit and contrasts that look nicely with his signature tee and beanie look. And boy has he got moves! Talk about skillz.

Citizen Kay said, “‘These Kicks’ stemmed from the saying ‘fake it till you make it’. I’ve been beginning to see others (and myself) trying ridiculously hard to force things to happen, to give a false perception of self, making it look as if you’re doing better than you are through means of material possessions. And through that, coming to the realization of how simple everything can become when you start becoming aware of how true another saying is, ‘the best things in life are free’.”

Couldn’t have said it better myself.

Lots more to come from Kay no doubt, especially considering he just signed with ONETWO, an artist-run label spearheaded by Illy.
