words by Corey Brown

In one short year, The Foundry in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley precinct has earned itself a reputation as Brisbane’s new go-to venue for some of the best rising acts. Hosting some of our country’s finest underground talents – among the likes Last Dinosaurs, Montaigne, and The Belligerents – the converted backpacker joint is fitted out to accommodate events and acts from all walks of sound.

Thursday night saw the celebration of The Foundry’s first birthday, boasting a line-up headed by the numerous Velociraptor, accompanied by Golden Vessel, Yuuca, Astro Travellers, Straight Arrows and WHALEHOUSE. The venue’s setup let the frothers to jump back and forth between stages, a la small festival format. Although balloons lined the corridors, I wouldn’t have said no to a lolly bag offer. What’s happened to birthday party etiquette these past 20 years? Anyway, we’ll let this one slide, Foundry.

Attendants were treated to Yuuca kicking of proceedings with their dreamy indie-tronica in the back room, followed by punk ladies WHALEHOUSE smashing the front room to a few dozen pieces. Golden Vessel rounded out the electronic music contingent, playing his honed, chilled-out beats to an ardent crowd.

It was probably around the time a dozen or so rolls of toilet paper began soaring overhead that I realised things had crept up a notch or two. Straight Arrows and Astro Travellers had revellers bumping to their respective hip-hop and retro-tinged punk, before Velociraptor crowded onto the stage for the final hurrah.

The Jensens put together a few hip hop tracks in a DJ set to close out the affair, seeing well-marinated punters off into the night. All in all, that’s a pretty damn good way to spend a Thursday night. Keep up the stellar work, Foundry.
