Shit Robot: We Got A Love [Review]

Words by Jacqui Wonder.

Shit Robot aka Marcus Lambkin will release his second album, We Got A Love next month and Hot Chip/LCD Soundsystem fans should mark March 17th in their diaries. A handful of DFA Records alumni join Shit Robot on this second full length outing including the bolshy Nancy Whang, Museum of Love and Luke Jenner of The Rapture, plus comedian Reggie Watts makes an appearance on the title track and opener ‘The Secret’.

Killer recent singles ‘Feels Real’ and ‘We Got a Love’ are must-plays, with BeeGee-esque vocals and eighties synth melodies on the first, and Reggie Watts’ funk-inspired singing/shooping and classic disco keyboard lines on the second, making the two tracks straight up fun, disco tunes.

Hit repeat on ‘Do That Dance,’ a disco inspired but minimalist track with some delicious vocals from Nancy Whang, and ‘Feels Like’ where Holly Backler flies the Aussie flag lending some seriously sensual vocal chords on a lower-tempo and subtle track that oozes sex appeal.

You may be tempted to skip ‘Do It (Right)’ with the slow, teasing build, but Shit Robot rewards your patience with an addictive track, layering in staccato and jumpy synth, bass and beats upon Lidell Townself’s breathy vocals. ‘Space Race’ couldn’t be more aptly named, with a dizzying melody built across multiple synth layers, backed up by percussion driving a relentless beat, you’d be forgiven for imagining yourself in a Flash Gordon style race.

Rating: ★★★

Here is ‘Feels Real’ featuring The Rapture‘s Luke Jenner, thanks to the DFA RecordsWhite Out Sessions.
