Grafton Primary: NEO [Album Review + Stream]

Words by Justine McNamara.

Sydney duo Grafton Primary have released their second full length album, NEO – an anagram of their 2008 debut Eon – and have produced some hard-hitting tracks to get us dancing.

There’s no filler on this album, each track has its own charm and appeal. Opener ‘Closer’ successfully gives us a taste of what’s to come. The uplifting melody and aptly timed “pop”s throughout the track make it impossible to dislike. The hopeful lyrics: “Music brings us closer when life is over,” are destined to put you in a good mood and have you bopping your head along.

‘What We Believe’ is funkier still, the energetic drumbeat is impossible not to love. While the lyrics: “The future belongs to lovers and dreamers, the power of hope is what we believe in,” can be seen as a little bit corny, think about seeing this song performed live and it doesn’t seem as lame. Coupled with that high-pitched synth riff and a rocking bass line, this song is definitely a stand out on the album.

The impossibly catchy ‘Time Machine’ is another standout, each layer is added perfectly and it achieves an interesting mix of sounds from start to finish. Again, the lyrics: “Love is a time machine, when you know what it means,” are a little bit corny but I forgive them for this, since they’ve obviously gone into this album with the intention of making something uplifting and fun.

The darkest track on the album ‘Love is a War’ still manages to be somewhat uplifting because of the melody and beat. The combination of pessimistic lyrics, a slightly slower tempo and more pronounced keys on this track is done perfectly.

The most refreshing thing about NEO is that it’s consistently energetic and fun without being tiring. There aren’t any slow tracks to mention, and there’s little to no contrast in the tempo; but this has been achieved in an uplifting way rather than making you beg for a rest. This album is perfect if you need a mid-week pick up or even a party starter for the weekend. It’s impossible to be in a bad mood after listening to it, and the funky riffs and beats will have you dancing around in seconds.

Grafton Primary have done a great job on NEO and given us a soundtrack for summer.
