I’lls: A Warm Reception [EP Review & Stream]

Words by Laura Bee.

From first listen, I’lls’ latest offering A Warm Reception embraced me tightly and didn’t let go. Warm and comfortable, it also made me a little melancholy in a beautiful way; like a joyful cry.

The classically trained Melbourne trio have put together an EP that is delicate, ethereal and consistent. With its seamless layers of drones, soft reverberated vocals, and tricky key signatures, each track carries you away, whilst giving you the feeling that this music is somehow good for your brain development.

There’s certainly a Thom York comparison to be drawn from I’lls. However, rather than a memorable hookline, I’lls instead leave you with a feeling, a moment, a memory. If someone asked me to sing them an I’lls’ tune, I couldn’t do it, but I could only tell them how it made me cry, smile, and want to hug the person next to me.

I get the sense that I’lls have more to offer.  I’m really looking forward to hearing more.

Star rating: 4 out of 5
