Cosmo’s Midnight: Surge [Review & EP Stream]

Words by Jacqui Wonder.

Put on your headphones, lie down, close your eyes and press play. Sydney-siders Cosmo and Patrick Liney, AKA Cosmo’s Midnight, have just offered up their debut EP Surge via Yes Please Records and if you’ve been following the twin-brother duo, you won’t be disappointed.

Title track ‘Surge’ and lead single ‘Phantasm’ are my picks, with Surge overall feeling more cohesive with Sydney-born, UK-based singer/songwriter James Shuar’s vocals. Waves of atmospheric melodies and a surging (funny that) synth that consistently comes through to bring you back down to earth. Sydney vocalist Nicole Miller donates her feathered, sweet vocals on ‘Phantasm,’ leaving you floating in ethereal bliss.

The remaining half of the EP features ‘Lover’s Shadow’ and ‘Won’t You Stay’ – heavier tracks that again, weave a maze of impressively clean percussion, bass and synth lines to create a complete state of dreamlike relaxation.

Overall the album will leave you on another planet, one carefully constructed from gorgeous melodies, and the precision and skill of two very talented twins.

Star rating: 3.5 out of 5
