Sounds like: Twin Sister, Purity Ring, Chairlift

I felt a little let down to learn that the musicians behind Psychic Twin were actually not psychic, or twins. The name came from when vocalist Erin Fein first started writing and recording. Doubling her vocals with counter-melodies felt to her as if she was working alongside a twin.

The Chicago-based act (which also includes Brett Sanderson and drummer Jonny Sommer) have been making gorgeous, dreamy pop music for a couple of years now, and have released a couple of 7’ double-sided singles to date. All their music is available on their Bandcamp page. |

Sounds like: Wild Nothing, Ariel Pink, Craft Spells

Hailing from Newcastle, five-piece Goldsmith’s well-crafted vintage-pop immediately reminds me of the brilliant US act Wild Nothing. After receiving plenty of positive reviews with their previous singles, they’ve just released great new track, ‘Backbone’.

After kicking off the Maitland Groovin the Moo over the weekend, they will be finishing up their single tour this Friday at the Beresford. Make sure you get along!

Sounds like: Shlohmo, Shigeto, Bonobo

I found it pretty difficult to settle on who I thought Brighton/London based Cosmo Sheldrake sounded like. The acts I chose, while similar, do not fully represent the music that this 22-year-old talent is making. A skilled looper, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and producer, he manages to mish-mash all these elements together to create truly intriguing and unique sounds.

In his off-time, he teaches improv and beatboxing workshops, as well as running empowerment and wilderness camps – as you do. He also plays alongside his brother (Merlin) in the dub 9-piece Gentle Mystics. |
