Dutch producer San Holo, will be in the country later this week kicking off his first ever Aussie tour which sses him playing 7 headline shows across 5 states in just 10 days.

Before the crazy begins, we jumped on the horn to ask what the first CD he ever owned was.

“My first CD was Chocolate Starfish and The Hot Dog Flavoured Water by Limp Bizkit….You either love them or hate them. I love them. You don’t have to like Fred Durst, nor agree with what he raps about. You don’t even have to listen to the lyrics. Their sound is undeniably distinct. Of course as a child I loved to rebel against all the bad things my parents or friends said about this band. The more people hated on them, the more I started loving them. No band sounded like Limp Bizkit. So many ‘fucks’ in every song! Wow. I felt so badass listening to them.

The guitarist of this band, Wes Borland, has his own way of playing a guitar. No one sounds like him. His guitar playing is very expressive, very heavy and very creative. This guy, together with Tom Morello (Rage Against The Machine) inspired me to start playing guitar, which eventually led to studying guitar & music production at the Rotterdam Conservatory. Which eventually led to me playing guitar in several bands and producing my own music.

I realize now that I was attracted to hip-hop king of vibes and beats since I was young, whether that involved heavy rock guitars or not. Rage Against The Machine is another great example of this. I didn’t like listening to the music everyone was listening to at that time. I respected it (I secretly also enjoyed Britney Spears songs sometimes), but listening to what was played on the radio just wasn’t exciting enough.

Nowadays I’m always on the lookout for music that sounds innovative. When I produce myself, I always try to do new shit. Sometimes it works, other times I unintentionally copy something or someone. But like Marcel Duchamp once said: “Art is either plagiarism or revolution.”
