BIGSOUND LIVE 2013 will see a smorgasbord of some of Australia’s best bands close in on Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley from September 11-12 to showcase their talents.
Sounds good, right? The more I look over the programme, the more daunted I feel.
Troubles arise when you realise just how many acts you ‘need to see,’ and try to map out exactly how you’re going to see them. If only someone would invent time travel and/or teleportation before next week, I’d be sorted. But, just in case that doesn’t happen, here are my ‘Bands to Watch’ on the first night.
Bands to Watch, Night 1 – Wednesday, September 11
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – Electric Playground (10:00PM – 10:30PM)
One of the most interestingly diverse Australian acts (check out their Western-themed album Eyes Like the Sky- http://kinggizzardandthelizardwizard.com/), they’ve become a revered live act.
MTNS – Triple J Unearthed Stage @ Oh Hello (8:20PM – 8:50PM)
The Brisbane trio were featured in our recent ‘Bands You Need to Know’ section, and were selected to perform at this year’s BIGSOUND as a Triple J Unearthed winner.
The Trouble With Templeton – Triple J Unearthed Stage @ Oh Hello (10:00PM – 10:30PM)
The Brisbane-based band’s recently released album Rookie is one of the more well-written and personal records you’ll hear this year.
Jonti – inthemix Stage @ the Rev (11:20PM – 11:50PM)
A one man music box, Jonti’s been recording his highly anticipated second album Tokorats, after spending most of last year touring around the world in support of some bloke named Gotye.
JONES Jnr. – inthemix Stage @ The Rev (8:50PM – 9.20PM)
There aren’t too many acts making music like Jones Jr. in Australia at the moment. Their colourful mix of soul, hip-hop and RnB is a refreshing change from a lot of the generic music available today.
Also check out Eagle & the Worm (Bakery Lane), SHE REX (Tempo Hotel), Glass Towers (Channel V Stage), Tales in Space (Triple J Unearthed Stage @ Oh Hello), Lanterns (inthemix Stage)
