Franz Ferdinand - Right Thoughts, Rights Words, Right Action

Franz Ferdinand: Right Thoughts, Rights Words, Right Action [Album Review]

Words by Renee Meznarsic.

10 years, 1 decade, 3,652 days, a qualifier for long service leave in Australia, and the time we have been lucky enough to have Franz Ferdinand in our lives.

It’s been a tumultuous 4 years since the release of Tonight, with the quartet on the verge of breaking up at one point, but thankfully for all of us at home, Alex Kapranos and the boys pushed through this and delivered Right Thoughts, Right Words, Right Action, which in a lot of ways, is their most upbeat, fun and flirtatious album yet.

‘Right Action,’ the all killer, no filler title-track pulls you in and gives a funky insight into this short and very sweet album. Those guitar riffs and that catchy chorus! It’s classic Franz and what we love them most for.

For the most part, Right Thoughts keeps you at this fun and cheeky plateau with ‘Evil Eye,’ ‘Love Illumination,’ and ‘Stand On The Horizon’ following its predecessor’s suit. Half way through, we get a shake up and get a glimpse into the sombre, more emotionally compelling side with ‘Fresh Strawberries.’ A brooding bass line purrs behind lyrics “Fresh burst of red strawberries, Ripe turning riper in the pole, We will soon be rotten, We will all be forgotten.” Now, as beautiful an imagery that is, I can’t help but wonder if this is a statement on the band’s near demise or an insight into the personal life of one Mr Alex Kapranos. Either way, it adds an enjoyable texture to this already well layered album.

Mature, fun and just a little bit sexy, the boys have delivered yet again! Overall Right Thoughts gets big ticks on all bases, one especially being the decision to not throw in the towel and make this album in the first place. For those of you looking for what could very well be the most enjoyable 35 minutes of your life, I highly recommend giving this bad boy a spin. If you’re not satisfied within the first 6 minutes of listening, I will personally give you your *money back!

Rating: ★★★★☆. Thank you, Franzy baby!

We’ll leave you with the album’s all killer, no-filler title-track, ‘Right Action’:
